The Appian Way (Via Appia) was the most important ancient Roman road.
It connected Rome to Brindisi, Apulia in southeast Italy. Via Appia Antica is the part of Via Appia abandoned in the Middle Ages in favour of Via Appia Nuova which linked the main road to the south with the Lateran.
This section is flanked by several tombs and other funeral monuments.
